Meteors v Mob
The sun beat down on us at Finsbury Park on a barmy summer evening, the memory of last weeks defeat against the Comets still fresh in our minds. The meteors are an established club and could always bring out a team that is strong on paper. Who had they brought tonight?
Paul gathered his troops together and gave a stirring talk and to bat we went. The first 5 bats all got round with some excellent hitting. Then to the field, the first is out, superb! Three runs followed, would we falter, 2 more outs and a sigh of relief. “Let’s build on that first innings!” was the cry, three outs followed. They get a run, then 2 outs, what of the third. A man at 2nd, one at 1st and yes they are out.
5-4 going into the 3rd innings and then Erika and Paul, an out, Stocky, Sarah, Al, Trish, the second out, Kendell, Dave, Miche, and Sam all get home. Then Erika and Paul get home again, it is an extraordinary display of hitting and running.an electric spirit running through the team. Their reply, 2 runs, our fielding nearly as good as the batting.
But wait, three quick outs puts as back in the field unable to build on our advantage. Our defence came through only allowing 1 home.
We can redeem ourselves and close off the game, again 3 quick outs, this feels like a mid order batting collapse. They get one home, an out. They another home, another
and another and yet another before we can get them out. 17-12 the closest it has been since the 2 innings.
Paul, Emma and Al all get home to steady the ship, tight in the field we hold them to a single run.
The final inning. The sun is getting lower in the late evening sky, our first to bat is out a smart catch in the field but wait…will the unimaginable happen…could another victory slip through our fingers….
Of course not! Miche, Sam, Erika, Paul, Emma, Stocky and Sarah all got home and we got them all out with only one of them getting to first. Final score 26-13 and we rocked!
All 12 who were magnificent, and Rebecca for her support.
Special mentions for Paul, Stock senior, Stock junior. Excellent running Sam and Sarah, great motivation from Kendell but it should be noted that it was the team that won and everyone played their part.
It was an honour to report on such fine victory, let there be many more.
